Oakland Raiders legend Jim Otto, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who played center for 15 seasons, has died at the age of 86. Otto underwent more than 70 football-related operations during his career, a testament to the physical toll the sport can take.
Otto was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1938. He played college football at the University of Miami, where he was a two-time All-American. He was drafted by the Raiders in the first round of the 1960 NFL Draft.
Otto was a key member of the Raiders' "Commitment to Excellence" era in the 1970s, which saw the team win three Super Bowls. He was named to the Pro Bowl nine times and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.
After retiring from football, Otto worked as a broadcaster and businessman. He was also a co-founder of the Jim Otto Recovery Fund, which provides financial assistance to former NFL players who are struggling with medical expenses.
Otto's death is a reminder of the sacrifices that athletes make in pursuit of glory. His legacy will live on as one of the greatest centers in NFL history and a true Oakland Raiders legend.
